The good thing about Tanoura is not the sand. It is that you can be standing on it fifteen minutes after leaving the house, without a car and without a timetable.
The ride is the point
There is a proper cycle path along this coast — a separated bicycle and pedestrian way running between Beppu Bay and National Route 10. It is flat, wide, and never shares space with traffic. The full route is about 7 km, from Nishi-Oita out to the Takasakiyama monkey park, and Tanoura sits on it.
I started from Kotobuki-machi and it took about fifteen minutes. It was easy — no hills worth the name — and I rode back the same way.
If you are not cycling:
- Bus — about 25 minutes from Oita station on the Beppu-bound bus, off at the Tanoura stop.
- Car — about 10 minutes from Oita station. There are 256 parking spaces and they are free, which for a beach this close to a city is unusual.
- Walking — it is 3.9 km from JR Nishi-Oita. Possible. Not advisable.
What is actually there
Tanoura is a city-run beach park, and it is better equipped than it looks:
- Swimming 1 July – 31 August, 9:00–17:00. The park itself stays open 9:00–23:30 all year.
- Hot showers year round, ¥100 for three minutes; free outdoor showers during the season.
- Changing rooms year round, and coin lockers at ¥200–300.
- A small turf island offshore and a Portuguese-ship climbing frame for children.
- Umitamago aquarium and Takasakiyama are right next door, so the beach works as half a day rather than a whole one.
It is also genuinely step-free — ramps, accessible toilets, ten accessible parking bays, and beach wheelchairs you can borrow for nothing. That is rare enough to be worth saying plainly.
The day we went
September 2026, with friends. The swimming season was over, so we did not swim — we went to look at the sea, which turned out to be enough.
It was not crowded. Out of season you get the place more or less to yourself.
The one thing I would warn you about: the wind. It was strong that day, and it comes straight off the bay with nothing in the way. Bring something with sleeves even in September.
We did not eat there. There is no row of shops behind the beach, so if you want food, carry it.
If you go
- Do not wait for summer. The park is open all year, and out of season is quieter and free of the swimming-hours rules.
- Bring food. This is the main thing people get wrong.
- Expect wind off the water, whatever the forecast in town says.
- Take the cycle path, not the main road. It is separate, flat, and the view is better.
- Pair it with Umitamago or Takasakiyama if you want a full day.
Worth it?
Tanoura is not a beach you travel to Japan for. It is a beach you can reach in a quarter of an hour on a bicycle, sit at for an afternoon, and ride home from before dinner.
For somewhere that close to a city of half a million people, that is a lot.
